SYDNEY, Jan 16 AAP - A man has been charged over a series of attacks on automatic teller machines in Sydney.

Police searched a unit in Wattle Crescent, Pyrmont early on Friday morning and arrested a 25-year-old man.

He was questioned about robberies from ATMs in Clovelly, Chester Hill and Rhodes in November and December, in which the machines were filled with flammable gas and exploded.

Police said he was also questioned about armed robberies at hotels, clubs and pharmacies across Sydney since September 17 last year.

The man was subsequently charged with 19 offences, including robbery armed with an offensive or dangerous weapon, larceny, aggravated breaking and entering, damaging property by fire or explosion, and shortening a firearm.

He was refused bail and will be appearing at Central Local Court later on Friday.

Police will allege they located a small quantity of illicit drugs and items believed to be connected to the ATM attacks and armed robberies.
