NSW: Firefighters kept busy with Sydney building fires

SYDNEY, Jan 16 AAP - Firefighters battled to put out three building blazes across Sydney overnight but they were unlikely to have been heat-related, a NSW Fire Brigades spokeswoman said.

Milder conditions and light rain in the Sydney area late on Thursday brought relief from the soaring temperatures.

"We've had a really busy night," the spokeswoman said.

But no one was hurt, she added.

In the first of the three blazes, a two-level fruit shop on Kingsway, Cronulla, in Sydney's south, was "totally destroyed" by fire early on Friday morning, she said.

The cause of the blaze remains unknown, with fire officers and a fire dog working on site on Friday to determine the source of the blaze.

Just before 2am (AEDT), Fire Brigades received a call about a house fire on Sydney Joseph Drive in Blacktown, in Sydney's west.

The bedroom of the single-level house was destroyed and the rest of the house damaged by smoke, the spokeswoman said.

Three people managed to escape the blaze and no one was injured.

The ground floor of a two-level brick building was destroyed during a unit fire on Rocky Point Road in the south Sydney suburb of Sans Souci.

The upper floor was also smoke damaged.
