WA: Man hospitalised after backpacker stabbing

PERTH, Jan 18 AAP - An Irish backpacker has been charged with stabbing a fellow countryman with a pair of scissors at a West Australian hostel.

Inspector George Putland said the incident happened about 3.15am (WDT) on Sunday when a fight between a 30-year-old and a 24-year-old began at the backpacker's hostel in Northbridge, in Perth's inner city.

"One picked up a pair of scissors and stabbed the other person three or four times," Insp Putland said.

The victim was stabbed in the left wrist, the upper arm, abdomen and shoulder.

He was taken with non life-threatening injuries to a Perth hospital for treatment.

Insp Putland said the 24-year-old, Robert Benjamin Butler, had been charged with unlawful wounding.

Butler will appear in the Perth Magistrates Court on Monday.
