SYDNEY, Jan 19 AAP - Sniffer dogs will be used during the Big Day Out music festival in Sydney as police target illegal drug use.

Police say they will also crack down on underage drinkers among the expected 55,000-strong crowd at Homebush for Friday's event, which runs from 10am (AEDT) to midnight.

"We want people to have a good time at Big Day Out, but we won't tolerate anti-social and criminal behaviour or illicit drug supply and use," Flemington Local Area Commander, Superintendent Brett Henderson said on Monday.

"We'll be putting a range of overt and covert policing measures in place again this year to detect drug possession and criminal behaviour."

A total of 124 arrests were made at last year's event, with 86 for drug-related offences.
