MID: Israel denies uranium charge

JERUSALEM, Jan 20 AP - Israel says allegations it used depleted uranium munitions in Gaza are propaganda.

Arab nations accuse Israel of using shells containing depleted uranium against Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip. They want UN nuclear inspectors to investigate reports that depleted uranium traces were found in shelling victims.

Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor said Tuesday that the allegations are "poor propaganda" and that similar accusations in the past were groundless.

Similar allegations were raised after the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon. Investigations found no proof depleted uranium munitions had been used.

Depleted uranium munitions are lightly radioactive. Researchers suspect depleted uranium may be behind chronic symptoms suffered by some veterans of the 1990-91 Gulf War.
