JERUSALEM, Jan 21 AFP - Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has briefed US President Barack Obama on the situation in Gaza during a phone call, the premier's office says.

"US President Barack Obama spoke this afternoon with Prime Minister Ehud Olmert," said the statement on Wednesday.

Olmert "briefed him on the situation in Gaza and said he was hoping that the measures being taken by Israel, Egypt, the United States and Europe to prevent arms smuggling into Gaza will succeed and that we are able to consolidate the ceasefire and able to continue in the future the peace process between Israel and the Palestinian Authority."

"The prime minister also said that Israel will do whatever it takes to provide for the humanitarian needs of the Palestinian population in the Gaza Strip and also to act to improve the economic situation of the Palestinian population in the West Bank."
