Qld: Woman in intensive care in home assault

BRISBANE, Jan 26 AAP - A woman is in intensive care after a man broke into her Gold Coast house and assaulted her.

The woman, whose identity has not been released, has severe facial injuries and bleeding on the brain and is in intensive care at the Gold Coast Hospital.

She was attacked at her house on TE Peters Drive at Broadbeach around 3.30am (AEST) on Sunday.

Gold Coast police's Detective Senior Sergeant Terry Goldsworthy said the attacker was disturbed by a female relative of the woman and ran from the scene.

"Police have not found the weapon at this stage and doctors are unable to say whether it was a blunt weapon - it may have just been the hands," Det Sen Sgt Goldsworthy said.

He said the attacker was believed to have entered the house through an unlocked screen door.

Police are searching for a man described as being of African- American in appearance, around 180-185cm tall with an athletic build and aged in his mid-20s.
