Qld:Rivers in north Qld expected to peak on Tuesday

Rivers in north Queensland are expected to peak tomorrow as rain from ex-tropical Ellie begins to ease.

The weather bureau says rivers in the Abergowrie Bridge area will rise rapidly this evening to 16 metres by 6pm (AEST) .. with further rises through the night.

Meanwhile .. tomorrow .. flooding along the Herbert River .. from the Nash's Crossing area to Ingham .. is expected to reach levels similar to the floods of 1977 .. 1986 and 1991 .. as waters arrive from the Gleneagle area.

The Herbert is expected to peak around the 12 metre mark at Gairloch but levels downstream at Halifax are predicted to stabilise at around 5.5 metres over the next two days.

19 schools in the region have been closed.
