MELBOURNE, Feb 12 AAP - A woman is dead, three men are critically injured and their alleged assailant is at large following a stabbing at a property in central Victoria.

Police say a man in his 40s came to a house in Chellews Road at Harcourt North, near Bendigo, about 9.15pm (AEDT) on Wednesday and stabbed four people inside.

The relationship between the parties is unclear but police say the incident may have been sparked by an ongoing dispute.

A woman in her 40s died at the scene.

Despite his injuries, a man in his 20s escaped to a neighbour's house to raise the alarm.

He and another man in his 20s, and a third man in his 40s, were flown to the Royal Melbourne Hospital where they remain in critical but stable conditions.

The intruder fled the scene.

He was thought to be driving a red Mitsubishi Triton utility with Victorian registration LC 1934.

Anyone who sees the vehicle is asked to contact police and not to approach the driver.
