18 Feb 2009 2:30 AM

It's been a common scam in Britain for years .. and now crooks look to have imported the concreting con to Australia.

Police are warning people in Victoria to look out for a group of bogus asphalt layers who approach people with an offer to bitumen their driveway.

The workers pretend to be council employees and say they've leftover asphalt that can be sold at a cheap price.

Usually the group start working prior to agreeing on a price .. then demand amounts in the thousands for the shoddy job they carry out.

Police say the suspects speak with an English accent .. wear reflective vests and drive around in utes with no business names on them.

They appear to be targeting elderly residents living in Geelong .. Ballarat .. Packenham and Colac.
