SYDNEY, Feb 24 AAP - A police officer has been charged with stealing money from a purse handed to him by a member of the public in western Sydney.

It's alleged the senior constable went to a home in Glenwood early in December after a purse containing cash and documents was found.

One hundred dollars had allegedly been removed from the purse by the time it was recorded at a police station later that day.

The senior constable was charged last week with stealing and suspended from duty without pay.

He is due to appear in Downing Centre Local Court on April 1.
