DARWIN, Feb 24 AAP - Northern Territory police have stumbled on a caravan in the bush that has quite literally gone to pot.

More than 200 cannabis plants were allegedly growing inside the vehicle parked near the Northern Territory-Queensland border.

Police believed although it was totally unroadworthy, the caravan was going to be towed to the remote Aboriginal community of Wunarra, about 100 kilometres west of Avon Downs.

Officers on a traffic campaign came across the caravan parked in a rest area close to the border on Monday afternoon.

The vehicle had no brakes, no rear lights, no safety chain and a damaged rear wheel, police said.

NT police, accompanied by Queensland police from the border town of Camooweal, examined the vehicle and allegedly uncovered the cannabis plants growing in 25 pots.

They also discovered two cartons of beer, a bottle of gin and a .22 magnum lever action rifle and ammunition.

A 43-year-old man was arrested and is expected to be charged later on Tuesday.
