ADELAIDE, Feb 27 AAP - Police have shot dead a gunman after a woman was killed during a domestic dispute in the South Australian Riverland.

The gunman shot a police officer in the hand as officers stormed a home in Barmera on Friday. The officer was not seriously hurt.

Police were called to the scene early in the morning, and realised a woman in the house had been shot.

"On arrival, police ascertained a woman had been shot in the house but police were unable to determine whether she was still alive," a police spokesman said.

"A police cordon was put in place and attempts were made to contact the occupants in the house, but this was unsuccessful."

A special police unit was flown to the scene and stormed the house.

"In the course of entering the premises, a man in the house allegedly shot at police wounding a police officer in the hand," the spokesman said.

Police returned fire and hit the armed man but despite immediate medical attention he died, the spokesman said.

"The woman was located inside the premises deceased," he said.

The circumstances of the shooting are now the subject of a police commissioner's inquiry.

A report is being prepared for the South Australian coroner.
