BRISBANE, Feb 28 AAP - Sunshine Coast police officers have arrested 20 people and searched up to 300 others during a drug blitz at Mooloolaba.

The officers were promoting a safer and drug-free environment as part of Operation Hotel Canter on Friday night.

Police dogs were used to search between 250 and 300 people and nine people were found with drugs and two with drug utensils.

Sunshine Coast District Officer Superintendent Ben Hanbidge said two of the people charged were found with a large number of ecstasy tablets.

Police said other arrests included public nuisance and drink driving.

Supt Hanbidge said since the first operation a year ago, drug possession had dropped from 48 offenders to nine.

"We are sending a clear message to people that they need to act responsibly in public, even when they are out to have a good time and the operations appear to be working to reduce drug possession in the Mooloolaba area," he said.

"Operations such as this are a key part of promoting safer communities".

Police also conducted 39 street checks and issued seven Liquor Infringement Notices during the operation.

The operation involved 60 police officers from the Sunshine Coast District, Brisbane Dog Squad, State Crime Operations Command and Public Safety Response Team.

Those charged are due to appear in the Maroochydore Magistrates Court in the coming weeks.
