MELBOURNE, March 8 AAP - A US Air Force bomber has made an emergency landing at Melbourne Airport.

The B1B Lancer bomber, which can carry conventional and nuclear arms over a large distance, landed at about 9.25pm (AEDT) on Saturday night after reporting problems with its landing gear.

Media reports say the plane, which is capable of speeds of more than 1,500km/h, was on its way to the Avalon Airshow but diverted to Tullamarine, with emergency services standing by as it landed.

Officials say the bomber landed without incident.

The emergency closed part of the airport, and Melbourne's Herald-Sun website says there could be delays at the airport on Sunday morning.
