Queensland health authorities say they're winning battles against the state's worst-ever outbreak of dengue fever .. but the war isn't over yet.

678 people have contracted dengue fever in the state's north since November .. and it's been blamed for the death of an 82-year-old woman in Cairns on March 1.

A Queensland Health spokesman says there's reason for optimism with the Cairns suburbs of Aloomba .. Clifton Beach .. Earlville .. Freshwater .. and Kewarra Beach .. and the town of Port Douglas no longer considered active sites for transmission.

Type two dengue fever is also no longer considered to be active in Cairns and Type three has abated in Townsville.

Despite the good news .. Type three is still active in Cairns.
