NSW: Dogs to sniff out contraband mobile phones

15 Mar 2009 5:04 AM

Sniffer dogs will be trained to nose out contraband mobile phones in a New South Wales-first trial aimed at keeping mobiles out of prisons.

A border collie named BOE and labrador named JEDDA will be the first dogs to go to mobile phone detection school at the Windsor Canine Unit in Sydney when the trial starts later this month.

The dogs would be trained to recognise the scent of lithium .. a chemical found in mobile phone batteries .. as they search inmates and visitors.

New South Wales Corrective Services Minister JOHN ROBERTSON says the program will be rolled out state-wide if the trial was successful.
