HOBART, March 18 AAP - A Queensland teenager has been charged with attempting to murder a mother and her son in Tasmania five years ago.

Tasmania Police Cold Case Unit detectives say they arrested an 18-year-old Queensland man in the outback town of St George, 500km west of Brisbane, on Wednesday.

The accused attacker would have been aged about 14 when he allegedly stabbed the mother, 43, and her 12-year-old son in their Devonport home about 3.30am on January 5, 2004.

The mother was in a critical condition in hospital for more than a month after being stabbed in the gut.

Her son survived being stabbed in the neck.

Their alleged attacker is being extradited to Hobart after appearing in the St George Magistrates Court on Wednesday morning.

He has been remanded into the custody of the Tasmanian detectives to appear in the Hobart Magistrates Court on Friday.

Police say they picked up this "cold case" in November last year.
