The Israeli army denies claims by a human rights group that its bombardment of heavily populated areas of Gaza with white phosphorous munitions.

The use of such weapons violates international law and human rights groups say could constitute a war crime.

Israel says an internal investigation indicates at this stage the use of smoke shells was in accordance with international law.

It says the shells were not used indiscriminately or to threaten the civilian population.
