NSW: Forest bird lost in the urban jungle

SYDNEY, March 31 AAP - Authorities are looking for a 10 centimetre tall escapee covered in green and white feathers.

The native animal rescue service WIRES wants Sydney residents to keep an eye out for a Forest Kingfisher seen recently in Parramatta's CBD.

The bird, which has green feathers with a white chest, was found on a path, unable to fly, and taken to an office.

But it escaped before WIRES van driver Mark Double arrived to collect it.

Mr Double said the Forest Kingfisher was rarely seen because it lives in forests.

"We planned to release the kingfisher into a more suitable habitat," Mr Double said.

"It is of no commercial value, but it needs to be released into its own environment."

WIRES urges anyone who has seen the bird, or any other native animal in distress, to call 1300 094 737.
