MELBOURNE, April 4 AAP - A fire has forced the evacuation of about 250 patrons at a hotel in Melbourne's inner north-west early on Saturday morning.

The fire in the O'Sullivans Hotel, in Mount Alexander Road, Essendon, started in the storage room about 1.50am (AEDT), a Metropolitan Fire Brigade spokeswoman said.

Fire crews contained it in that area and had it under control in 20 minutes, she said.

About 250 people in the hotel at the time had to be evacuated.

Fire investigators are looking into the cause of the fire, which is estimated to have caused up to $50,000 damage, the MFB spokeswoman said.
