MELBOURNE, April 5 AAP - A man was killed and his brother was seriously injured after they were hit by cars while fighting on a road south of Melbourne.

Four members of a family were driving along the Point Nepean Road in the bayside town of Rye when the two brothers, aged 21 and 22, began arguing in the back seat about 12.30am (AEDT) on Sunday.

The car pulled over and the pair got out and began pushing and shoving each other, while their father, 46, attempted to intervene.

All three were hit by a passing grey ute, while a second car also hit the 22-year-old man who died at the scene.

The 21-year-old was airlifted to The Alfred hospital with life-threatening injuries, and the father was treated at the Rosebud Hospital for abrasions.

A police officer patrolling the Point Nepean Road witnessed the incident and the drivers of the two cars were assisting police with their inquiries.

The death takes Victoria's road toll to 90, nine more than at the same time last year.
