CANBERRA, April 20 AAP - An Australian woman has died while walking the famous Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea.

A spokesman for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) said the Victorian woman was walking with relatives and a friend when she died.

It's believed she died on Friday.

The department was not able to provide details about the cause of death.

Consular officials in Port Moresby are assisting the woman's relatives and friend.

The Kokoda Track, an historic 96km trek which follows the path used by diggers in World War II, is popular with Australian tourists.

The trek can take up to 10 days and passes through mountains and steep valleys.
