MELBOURNE, May 1 AAP - A Romanian man has been arrested at a Melbourne hotel by police investigating ATM card skimming.

The 33-year-old was detained in his hotel room on Spencer Street at about midday (AEST) on Friday and later charged with seven offences of obtaining property by deception and possessing skimming equipment.

Detectives said the alleged offences were committed in Melbourne's CBD over the past three days.

Friday's arrest follows the recent laying of charges against several Romanians in Melbourne and Sydney over alleged ATM card skimming activities.

Police have said they believe eastern European criminal gangs are behind ATM scams that have netted millions of dollars.

The man arrested on Friday was due to face Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Friday.
