SA: Road cameras to catch unregistered and uninsured vehicles
04 May 2009 2:39 AM
From next month .. road traffic cameras in South Australia will not only catch offending drivers .. but also unregistered and uninsured vehicles.
Road safety minister MICHAEL O'BRIEN says all cameras .. including speed and red light cameras .. can now be used to detect illegal vehicles on SA roads.
Previously .. police have not had the powers to match licence plates with registration details.
Mr O'BRIEN says the increased detection capability will be complemented by tougher penalties for owners who fail to register their vehicles and take out compulsory third party insurance.
A one-month public information campaign started yesterday .. with the changes to come into effect from June 1.
