JERUSALEM, May 27 AP - A swimmer who was swept more than eight kilometres offshore from an Isreali beach has been rescued after he was spotted by the crew of an Israeli navy submarine.

The military says the submarine was engaged in a routine patrol in the Mediterranean off the port city of Haifa on Tuesday when crew members noticed the swimmer. It says the man was "exhausted and weak".

The sailors took the man on board and a medic stabilised his condition. He was then taken to a military base on shore and later transferred to hospital.

The Israeli daily Maariv said the 27-year-old man had been swimming at a Haifa beach when he was swept out to sea.

A spokeswoman for Rambam hospital in Haifa said on Wednesday that the man was briefly treated and released.
