Vic: Flu cases hit triple figures but no sport restrictions

30 May 2009 2:21 AM

The number of Victorians infected with swine flu has spilled into triple figures .. as tens of thousands of people prepare to pack football stadiums this weekend.

But health authorities won't close sporting venues or shut down amateur matches .. and say spectators and players have no cause for alarm.

Victorian swine flu cases have accelerated in the past 36 hours .. with another 42 cases confirmed yesterday to bring the state's tally to 138.

More than three thousand people are in voluntary quarantine and hundreds more have been asked to limit their social contact.

But the state's acting chief health officer Dr ROSEMARY LESTER says as long as people are sensible about their personal hygiene .. weekend sport will be safe.

Dr LESTER says there's no need to recommend the use of face masks .. but she's reiterated that anyone suffering flu symptoms should stay home and seek medical advice.
