Qld: Six dead in Qld horror road toll

BRISBANE, June 7 AAP - Queensland's long weekend road toll has jumped to six with a double fatality in far north Queensland on Sunday afternoon.

Four of the deaths occurred in the far north of the state.

Police said a man and a woman died in a two-vehicle head-on crash at around 4.10pm (AEST) on the Bruce Highway at Edmonton, near Cairns.

Earlier on Sunday one of two people cut free from a vehicle died on the way to hospital after a two-car crash at Gooburrum, near Bundaberg in southeast Queensland at about 9.30am (AEST).

Another person was transported to Bundaberg Hospital with serious injuries while two others taken to hospital had minor injuries.

A man, believed to be in his 50s, died when he lost control of his motorbike around 6.30am on the Captain Cook Highway near Ellis Beach north of Cairns.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

On Saturday a three-year-old boy died on the way to hospital following a traffic crash in Ravenshoe on the Atherton Tableland.

A 50-year-old scooter rider died after a 4WD lost control at Gaven, near the Gold Coast at around 1.25am on Saturday.

The driver of the 4WD has been charged with dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death, drink driving, fail to fulfil duties after a crash, drive an unregistered vehicle and drive outside the conditions of a licence.

He is due to appear in the Southport Magistrates Court on June 8.
