Qld: Australia's worst air crash to be remembered in US

The American victims of a World War Two air disaster in Australia will be remembered in a ceremony in the United States early today our time.

The 40 who died were soldiers and airmen .. stationed at Bakers Creek, near Mackay in central Queensland.

Their B17-C Flying Fortress troop carrier came down on June 14 in 1943 .. but due to military security surrounding the US war presence in Australia .. the details were kept secret for decades.

A granite monument to the dead will officially unveiled at the gates of the Arlington War Cemetery in Virginia.
