SA: Lower limits still the key to cutting road deaths

12 Jun 2009 2:33 AM

Researchers say driving slower and using new technology could help to reduce deaths and severe injuries on Australian roads.

SAM DOECKE .. a research officer with the Centre for Automotive Safety Research at the University of Adelaide .. says improvements also could be made in including road and vehicle design.

But he says the best way to reduce injuries and deaths is to reduce speeds.

The researcher says after Adelaide cut its speed limit from 60 kilometres to 50 .. the number of casualties dropped by 23 per cent.

He says .. however .. community attitudes towards slowing down and also allowing technology to take control .. remain a major hurdle to overcome.
