The prime minister's launched a probe into the OzCar affair .. despite his belief that a false email is at the centre of a smear campaign suggesting he tried to a secure a government loan on behalf of a mate.

Opposition Leader MALCOLM TURNBULL's demanded KEVIN RUDD explain his links to Ipswich car dealer JOHN GRANT .. or resign.

Late yesterday .. Mr RUDD flatly rejected claims raised in a Senate inquiry that his office lobbied on behalf of Mr GRANT .. who's been seeking assistance under the two billion dollar OzCar vehicle financing scheme.

Despite assurances the government's done nothing wrong .. the PM has asked the Commonwealth auditor-general to investigate the matter by the end of July.

Earlier yesterday GODWIN GRECH .. the Treasury official in charge of OzCar .. told a Senate inquiry his recollection was that Mr RUDD's office had first raised Mr GRANT's plight with him via email.

That email can't now be found despite searches of computers involved .. and the prime minister suggests it might never have existed.
