Senior Liberal TONY ABBOTT has compared GODWIN GRECH to a heroic whistle-blower .. despite the treasury official admitting he created the fake email at the centre of the OzCar affair.
Mr ABBOTT says he believes Mr GRECH is eccentric .. but says that doesn't mean he wasn't acting in the public interest when he first raised concerns about Labor's two billion dollar car dealer-financing scheme.
Mr ABBOTT says Mr GRECH was previously an able .. diligent .. conscientious and public-spirited servant of Australia .. but at some point his judgement failed him.
Opposition Leader MALCOLM TURNBULL relied on Mr GRECH'S evidence to go after Prime Minister KEVIN RUDD and Treasurer WAYNE SWAN .. but is now facing calls from the government to stand down himself.
However .. Mr ABBOTT says Mr TURNBULL'S leadership of the coalition remains secure.
