A severe weather warning remains in place for the New South Wales southeast after gail force winds brought widespread damage and caused power outages to more than seven-thousand Sydney homes.

The State Emergency Service says squally westerly winds are expected to develop in southeastern New South Wales into this morning ahead of a cold front.

A weather warning is in force for the Riverina .. southwest slopes .. southern tablelands .. the Australian Capital Territory .. Illawarra .. south coast metropolitan .. central tablelands and Alpine areas.

West to northwest winds are expected to average over 65 kilometres at times with peak wind gusts in excess of 90 kilometres and there's a 40 per cent chance of strong winds whipping through Sydney early today.
