The fire started in Western Sydney Parklands and is burning west of the M7, in a south-easterly direction towards the properties, the RFS said.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.

An RFS spokesman said temperatures of about 34 degrees in the area were hampering firefighting efforts.

"There is not much wind, the main problem is the temperatures and low humidity," he said.

"Under these conditions fires will be uncontrollable and move quickly," the RFS says on its website.

"Embers will be blown ahead of the fire and create spot fires that can threaten earlier than the predicted main fire front."

Motorists on the M7 are advised to take care as the road may be affected by smoke.
