A second wild colony of the critically endangered northern hairy-nosed wombat will be created in Queensland.

About 115 northern hairy-nosed wombats live in an area the size of Brisbane's CBD at Epping Forest National Park in central Queensland.

Now a second colony will be established near St George .. west of Toowoomba .. after ED and GABI UNDERWOOD signed a nature refuge agreement with Queensland's Environmental Protection Agency.

Environment Minister ANDREW MCNAMARA says the UNDERWOODS have dedicated 130 hectares of their farming land as a wombat refuge.
