The head of Australia's peak university body has called on the federal government NOT to delay overhauling the higher education sector because of the global financial crisis.

Universities Australia chair RICHARD LARKINS says the recent economic downturn proves education is the key to prosperity.

He says university research allows manufacturing and service exports to compete on quality rather than price alone.

Mr LARKINS says the era of mineral-export-driven wealth is also under threat.

He says the recent fate of Pacific Brands shows Australia needs prosperity based on a diverse and sustainable economy .. with a highly educated and skilled workforce.
