SYDNEY, March 5 AAP - A man is dead after being hit by a semi-trailer on the M5 Motorway in Sydney's southwest, police say.

The man had been driving alone in a Honda Civic hatchback east on the motorway near Belmore Road in Riverwood when a problem with his car forced him to the centre of the freeway.

He then scraped along the centre barrier and came to a halt, a police spokesman said.

The man, believed to be in his early 40s, got out of his vehicle and was immediately struck by an eastbound prime mover and trailer.

Paramedics could not resuscitate the man.

The eastbound lanes of the M5 have been closed and police are urging motorists to find an alternative route.

Anyone who witnessed the crash should phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
