A leading defence analyst says the federal government's decision to boost troop numbers in Afghanistan is strategically incoherent and doomed to failure.

Australian National University professor HUGH WHITE believes the prime minister's claim that the increase could lead to the eventual withdrawal of combat units is a fantasy.

KEVIN RUDD announced today that Australia's commitment would increase from 11-hundred to one thousand-550 troops.

The aim is to train an Afghan National Army 4th brigade capable of providing security in Oruzgan Province on its own.

Professor WHITE has told ABC TV the United States .. Australia and other governments simply aren't willing to commit enough troops to actually make inroads in the war-torn country.
