NSW: Rewards doubled as police target ATM bandits with dye bombs

07 May 2009 2:04 PM

The New South Wales government has doubled the reward it's offering to anyone with information leading to a conviction over a spate of ATM explosions .. to 200-thousand dollars.

Police Minister TONY KELLY says there's no single solution to solving the problem .. but strategies including the placement of dye bombs in some ATM canisters will discourage would-be thieves.

Mr KELLY says the Reserve Bank has agreed to replace money destroyed by the dye bombs .. so banks and financial institutions won't lose out.

Police Commissioner ANDREW SCIPIONE says it's not necessary for all ATMs to stock the bombs .. as those in high rise buildings or within some shopping centres are at less risk than those at street level.
