SYDNEY, May 26 AAP - An off-duty police officer has been charged with assaulting a uniformed colleague during a drunken scuffle in northern NSW.

Police said they were dealing with an intoxicated person about 12.25am (AEST) on Monday at Byron Bay "when it is alleged two men began hindering the officers".

"One of the males was an off-duty 38-year-old attached to a ... command within the Southern Region," police said in a statement on Tuesday.

"It is alleged the off-duty senior constable grabbed one of the officers and as a result was pushed away."

Police allege the off-duty officer then punched the policeman on the jaw.

He was issued a court attendance notice for assaulting police in the execution of duty and will face Byron Bay Local Court on June 19.
