NSW: "Jelly Balls" on beaches no threat to swimmers

Scientists say the strange jelly balls washing up on New South Wales beaches may play a role in fighting climate change.

The University of New South Wales and the CSIRO say the salps could be reducing the amount of carbon in the atmosphere by feeding on algae.

The scientists say there's been a tenfold increase in salps over the past 70 years.

The increase seems to be due to a strong Eastern Australian Current .. which is bringing more nutrients to the surface waters for the algae.
