FED: Sex enjoyment doubles with hormone patch
07 Nov 2008 2:33 AMResearchers say post-menopausal .. and some younger .. women can have better sex if they use the male hormone testosterone .. applied by a stomach patch.
Many women are concerned about the idea of using a male hormone .. but the researchers say women actually have more testosterone in their blood at anygiven time than the so-called female hormone oestrogen.
Sexual health specialists have welcomed the findings as a gift for older women with a flagging sex drive.
Professor BASIL DONOVAN from the University of Sydney says testosterone is the only agent known to improve desire and arousal in women .. with resultsfrom a new international trial suggesting the benefits in the bedroom are very substantial.
That's been supported by lead investigator Professor SUSAN DAVIS from Monash University in Melbourne .. who says women who've used the patch say they've experienced twice the number of satisfactory events than women using a placebo patch.
Details of the study are published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
