NSW: Taxi driver rapist sentenced to eight years jail
14 Nov 2008 2:22 PMA Sydney taxi driver who turned off his surveillance camera before raping an intoxicated woman in the back seat of his cab .. has been sentenced toat least eight years in jail.
In September a New South Wales District Court jury found Bangladeshi student MD KOWSAR ALI guilty of two counts of indecent assault .. for sexual intercourse without consent.
It had been told ALI picked the 18-year-old woman up in the early hours of November 4 last year .. after she'd been drinking with friends in inner Sydney.
The court heard the assault took place on the way to her home in the southern suburbs.
Semen recovered during an internal examination returned a match with ALI's DNA.
In handing down his sentence today .. Judge PETER BERMAN said it's clear the 22-year-old took advantage of a vulnerable woman who was obviously drunk.
ALI's been sentenced to a maximum of ten years and eight months .. but withtime served he'll be eligible for parole in November 2015.
