NSW: Severe thunderstorm warning after storm strands passengers 15 Nov 2008 6:25 PM

SYDNEY, Nov 15 AAP - A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued by the Bureau of Meteorology for Sydney, Newcastle, Wollongong and surrounding areas following a spectacular lightning storm across Sydney last night.

Hundreds of travellers were left stranded at Sydney Airport and Qantas saidit was forced to accommodate 1,200 people in hotels in the city, while 900people were left stranded in Melbourne.

Flights had returned to normal today, a spokeswoman said.

A Virgin Blue spokeswoman said about eight flights were cancelled this morning because planes had remained in other ports due to bad weather.

About 200 of the airline's passengers were stranded in Sydney last night.

Services returned to normal mid-morning, the spokeswoman said.

Sydney Airport has advised it was experiencing no disruptions today due to weather.

However, passengers are still advised to contact individual airlines for information about their flights.
