Fed: Govt working to close alcopop loophole

23 Nov 2008 2:51 AM

The federal government is set to close a loophole allowing drink makers to avoid a higher tax by passing products off as beer that look and taste like alcopops.

Fairfax newspapers report the government wants to crack down on alcoholic products known as malternatives .. which are brewed and taxed like beer .. but have the colour and sweetness of the higher-taxed alcopops.

Fairfax reveals one retailer is selling two four-packs of one malternative for as little as 16 dollars .. at the same time as the government launches its anti-binge ads campaign to coincide with Schoolies Week.

Health Minister NICOLA ROXON says the government is watching the industry closely and hopes alcohol makers take a responsible approach.
