NSW: Thieves steal three police vests in two robberies

23 Nov 2008 2:08 PM

SYDNEY, Nov 23 AAP - Thieves have stolen three bullet-proof vests after breaking into police cars parked outside two inner-Sydney stations.

Police said the thefts occurred less than an hour apart, the first outside Glebe Police Station, in the inner-west, around midnight Saturday and then at Waverley Police Station in Sydney's east.

Two males with slim builds and wearing hoodies were seen running from the scene in Glebe, where two of the vests were stolen and a police vehicle damaged.

One vest was taken from a police car at Waverley.

Early Sunday morning police pursued a speeding Mercedes Benz near Bondi Beach but had to stop the chase due to excessive speeds.

The car was spotted again a short time later at nearby Queens Park, where officers followed it before two men got out, one possibly carrying a handgun.

Both men fled and despite the efforts of PolAir, the Dog Squad and the Tactical Operations Unit remain at large.

Officers searching the area did however locate one of the jackets and some personal belongings.

Investigators are now determining whether all three incidents are linked.

The police vehicles that were broken into are being examined by forensic officers.
