NSW: Black smoke from tyre fire cleared
23 Nov 2008 1:28 PMSYDNEY, Nov 23 AAP - Thick, black smoke caused by a large pile of burning car tyres at an industrial yard in Sydney's west has been cleared, NSW Fire Brigades say.
NSW Fire Brigades were called to an industrial yard on Donald Street, Yennora, at around 5.25am (AEDT) on Sunday morning and arrived to find a large pile of black, rubber car tyres on fire.
There were concerns that that the thick, black smoke let off from the tyrescould pose a threat to residents living in the area because of strong winds.
"We were warning residents to stay indoors and keep the windows shut if they believed they had any breathing difficulties," spokesman Tom Cooper told AAP.
But no houses had been threatened and no one had been injured, he confirmed.
By Sunday afternoon the fire had been extinguished and smoke had been cleared, firefighter Nick Gaite told AAP.
A tractor was called in to turn the pile of tyres over and ensure the blazewas fully extinguished, he said.
The Hazardous Materials (HazMat) team checked that no contaminated water was leaked into the area and that there were no problems with air quality, headded.
"We put the fire out, the HazMat did a survey of the fire, it's all finished and everyone's gone home," said Mr Gaite.
It was unclear what caused the fire.
