Qld: Policeman on drink-driving charge

BRISBANE, Nov 23 AAP - An off-duty senior constable has been charged with drink-driving on the Gold Coast after a marked police van was seen being driven erratically.

The policeman, a member of the Brisbane Dog Squad, allegedly had an alcoholreading of 0.353 per cent and was charged with driving under the influenceafter being detained on Hope Island on Saturday evening.

Gold Coast Police District superintendent Jim Keogh confirmed the incident and expressed shock at the high reading.

""A police officer from the dog squad was arrested here on the Gold Coast last night for drink-driving," he told journalists during a schoolies briefing on the Gold Coast.

"0.35 - it is an enormously high reading ... it is concerning.

"It is a very serious matter, and as such, of course, ethical standards arereviewing the matter."

The incident was not connected to schoolies, an annual mass gathering of school leavers on the Queensland coastal strip, he said.

The officer, a Gold Coast resident, is due to appear in Southport Magistrates Court on December 9.
