24 Nov 2008 4:11 PM

A quick-thinking woman leant over her injured husband to push the brake pedal with her hands after he was injured by a rock that smashed through their car windscreen.

The 56-year-old Penshurst man and his 53-year-old wife were travelling south on the F6 at Berkeley through a section known as The Cutting .. when a two kilogram rock was thrown at their car yesterday afternoon.

The rock hit the man's wrist before bouncing into his chest and coming to rest on the handbrake.

The couple .. who wish to remain anonymous .. were shaken by the incident .. and the man was treated at Wollongong Hospital for bruising and lacerations.

The woman and the car's two other passengers .. overseas visitors who were keen to see the Bradman Museum at Bowral .. weren't hurt.

The man's told reporters the noise of the impact sounded like a gunshot .. and as the car skidded along the road's guard rail .. his wife managed to reach across her husband and apply the foot brake with her hand.
