DARWIN, Nov 24 AAP - A teenage girl was critically injured and another suffered cuts when they leapt from the back of a moving road train in the Northern Territory.

The girls, aged 13 and 19, climbed onto the back of the vehicle at Ti Tree on Monday morning.

The road train then travelled along the Stuart Highway and the girls leapt off about a kilometre outside Tennant Creek, police said.

The 13-year-old was taken to Tennant Creek Hospital in a critical condition. The other girl, aged 19, suffered lacerations and is in a stable condition.

They will be flown to Alice Springs for further treatment, police said on Monday night.

The distressed driver of the road train is also in hospital where he is being treated for shock.
